About Social Groups at The Lark Center
The Lark Center’s groups are not your average social group. We do things differently here, and for good reason: our clients deserve to be supported in the way that works best for them, as opposed to what is convenient for us. Our groups are carefully curated based on the interests, needs, and age groups of our current clients to promote meaningful connections and a feeling of safety and belonging. Safety, community, and authenticity are our top priorities in our groups, which is why each client is evaluated for goodness-of-fit prior to enrollment. Groups run in sessions of 8-12 weeks so that progress can be evaluated and any necessary changes implemented in a timely manner.
We do not teach “social skills” because that implies we know what the “right way” to socialize is. Research has consistently shown that neurodivergent individuals have social skills that often work perfectly well when in a group of other neurodivergent individuals. They may just not be what neuro-normative populations expect. By setting up the environment to be supportive of sensory and communication needs, making socially supportive strategies explicit and available, and by trusting the clients’ own instincts, our clients start to increase their feelings of confidence, competence, and community.
We welcome all ages, all identities, all abilities, and all interests. Come as you are. Leave with a whole village. We hope to see you soon!
